El poble que caminava en la foscaha vist una gran llum; una llum ha resplendit per als qui vivien al país tenebrós.
2
Els has multiplicat, Senyor, els has omplert d’una alegria immensa. S’alegren davant teu com la gent a la sega, com els vencedors que es reparteixen el botí.
3
El jou que els afeixugava, la barra que duien a l’espatlla, el garrot del seu opressor, tot ho has trossejat com el dia de Madian.
4
Les botes dels soldats que sotraguejaven la terra i els mantells rebolcats en la sang, tot crema alhora, el foc ho devora.
5
Perquè ens ha nascut un infant, ens ha estat donat un fill que porta a l’espatlla la insígnia de príncep. Aquest és el seu nom: «Conseller prodigiós», «Déu heroi», «Pare per sempre», «Príncep de pau».
6
Estendrà arreu la sobirania, i la pau no tindrà fi. Assegut al tron de David, establirà i refermarà el seu regne sobre el dret i la justícia, des d’ara i per sempre. Això és el que farà l’amor ardent del Senyor de l’univers.
7
El Senyor ha llançat una paraula contra Jacob, una amenaça ha caigut sobre Israel.
8
Tot el poble l’ha coneguda, però Efraïm i els habitants de Samaria diuen amb arrogància orgullosa:
9
«Si cauen els maons, edificarem amb pedra; si talen els sicòmors, repoblarem amb cedres.»
10
El Senyor ha instigat contra Israel els enemics, els de Ressín, ha atiat els seus adversaris:
11
els arameus pel davant i els filisteus pel darrere; entre tots han devorat Israel. Però, amb tot, no s’ha calmat la indignació del Senyor, i la seva mà continua amenaçant.
12
El poble no ha retornat a qui el castigava, no s’ha girat cap al Senyor de l’univers.
13
Per això el Senyor, en un sol dia, ha tallat a Israel el cap i la cua, la palma i el jonc.
14
El cap és l’ancià i el noble; la cua, el profeta mentider.
15
Els guies d’aquest poble l’han esgarriat, i els qui els seguien han desaparegut.
16
Per això el Senyor no serà favorable als joves ni s’apiadarà dels orfes i les viudes, perquè tots són infidels i malvats i sols parlen d’insensateses. Però, amb tot, no s’ha calmat la indignació del Senyor, i la seva mà continua amenaçant.
17
La maldat abrusa com el foc quan consumeix espines i esbarzers, quan arbora l’espessor del bosc i s’enlaira en columnes de fum.
18
L’ardor del Senyor de l’univers abrusa el país; el poble és consumit pel foc. Ningú no té entranyes per a ningú:
19
tallen a la dreta i encara tenen fam, devoren a l’esquerra i no en tenen prou. La carn que mengen és el propi braç:
20
Manassès devora Efraïm, i Efraïm, Manassès; i tots dos s’uneixen contra Judà. Però, amb tot, no s’ha calmat la indignació del Senyor, i la seva mà continua amenaçant.
