Iš tikrųjų tik pajuoka lydi mane, mano akys naktį praleidžia kartėlyje.

Man akys aptemo nuo širdgėlos, visi mano sąnariai – tarsi šešėliai.

Dorus žmones tai stebina. Nekaltasis piktinasi nedorėliu,

tačiau teisusis laikosi savo kelio; žmogus švariomis rankomis vis stiprėja.

Tad eikite šen, jūs visi, vėl pulkite mane. Išmintingo žmogaus tarp jūsų nerasiu nė vieno!

Baigėsi mano dienos, subiro mano svajonės, nutrauktos mano širdies stygos.

Tokie žmonės sako, kad naktis – tai diena. ‘Šviesa, – sako jie, – netoli tamsos!’

Jei turiu laikyti Šeolą savo buveine, jei klojuosi guolį tamsybėje,

jei sakau kapui: ‘Tu mano tėvas!’ ir kirmėlėms: ‘Jūs mano motina! Mano sesuo!’ –

tai kur mano viltis? Ar mato kas mano viltį?

Ar nužengs ji į Šeolą? Ar nužengsime drauge į dulkes?“
