Ver van die huis af het ons gesit, eensaam by ’n rivier in Babilon. Daar was ons slawe in die vreemde. Ons het gehuil. Sonder ’n land en ons eie plek om die Here te aanbid het ons gehuil as ons aan die huis terugdink.

Ons wou nie meer sing en musiek maak nie.

Die mense wat ons gevang en so sleg behandel het, het ons gespot. Hulle wou hê ons moet vrolik sing en bly wees, maar ons kon nie. Hulle het geëis: “Sing ’n lied oor die Here se woonplek in Jerusalem!”

Hoe kan ons liedere sing wat al die ou herinnerings terugbring? Dit is net nie dieselfde om die Here hier te loof nie. Ons is te ver van die plek af waar ons Hom altyd gedien en aanbid het.

Ek sal Jerusalem, waar ons die Here aanbid het, nooit vergeet nie, al is dit nou ’n ashoop.

As ek die stad vergeet, kan ek net sowel vergeet om my regterhand te gebruik. Dit sal nie gebeur nie. Mag ek vir altyd ophou praat as ek daardie plek vergeet waar ons die Here aanbid het. Niks maak my blyer as om daaraan te dink nie.

Here, straf die mense wat ons kosbare tempel platgeslaan het. Hulle het ons besteel. Hulle het gesê: “Breek dit af; slaan dit plat tot op die grond.”

O, julle mense van Babel wat ons plek verwoes het, die Here gaan julle ook verwoes. Julle verdien ’n swaar en wrede straf. Gelukkig is die een wat jou vergeld vir wat jy aan ons gedoen het.
9
As iemand julle kinders se koppe teen die mure stukkend slaan, is dit julle verdiende loon.
