Message intitulé “Moab”. Le livre d'Ésaïe place ici une lamentation sur Moab qui se retrouve pour une bonne part dans le livre de Jérémie, au chap. 48. Le pays de Moab est anéanti. La mort est partout. Pleurs et deuil! Les habitants, pris de panique face à ce désastre, cherchent à fuir. En vain… Un silence de mort plane sur la ville d'Ar-en-Moab, anéantie en une nuit. Un silence de mort plane sur Quir-en-Moab, elle aussi anéantie en une nuit.

Les gens de la Maison et de Dibon sont montés au lieu sacré pour y pleurer; à Nébo et à Mèdeba, Moab entonne des complaintes. Toutes les têtes sont rasées et toutes les barbes coupées.

Dans les rues des villes, on porte l'habit de deuil; sur les terrasses des maisons et sur les places publiques, tous entonnent des complaintes, tout le monde est en larmes.

A Hèchebon, à Élalé, les gens appellent au secours, on les entend jusqu'à Yahas. C'est pour cela que Moab a les reins qui fléchissent, son moral est au plus bas.

J'appelle au secours pour Moab. Ses fuyards courent jusqu'à Soar, jusqu'à Églath-Selissia. On gravit en pleurant la montée de Louhith, sur le chemin de Horonaïm, on crie au désastre.

L'oasis de Nimrim est sinistrée, les plantes sont desséchées, l'herbe fraîche a disparu, il n'y a plus de verdure.

Les quelques biens qui restaient, ceux qu'on avait pu conserver, on les emporte plus loin, au-delà du torrent des Peupliers.

On perçoit des cris d'appel sur tout le pourtour du territoire de Moab. Ses complaintes s'entendent jusqu'à Églaïm, jusqu'au puits d'Élim.

Le torrent qui passe à Dimon sera rouge de sang. « J'apporte en effet à Dimon un nouveau malheur, dit le Seigneur: un lion qui s'attaquera aux survivants de Moab, aux rescapés du pays. »
