C'était l'année où le général en chef des troupes assyriennes vint attaquer la ville d'Asdod en Philistie, sur l'ordre du roi, Sargon d'Assyrie, et s'empara d'elle. Ésaïe se promène pendant trois ans à moitié nu pour annoncer quel sera le sort de l'Égypte. Ce présage (v. 3) trouve sa réalisation lors de la prise d'Asdod par les Assyriens vers 713. La parole du Seigneur mise en actes par Ésaïe dévoile l'illusion d'une alliance avec l'Égypte. D'après le v. 1, cette prophétie concerne les Philistins. Mais entendue et manifestée à Jérusalem, la parole d'Ésaïe s'adresse au roi et au peuple de Juda, enclins à faire alliance avec l'Égypte au mépris de la confiance dans le Seigneur.

Trois ans plus tôt, le Seigneur avait dit à Ésaïe, fils d'Amots: « Tu vas dénouer l'étoffe de deuil que tu portes autour des reins et ôter les sandales que tu as aux pieds. » C'est ce qu'avait fait Ésaïe; il se promenait donc sans vêtements ni chaussures.

A l'époque de la prise d'Asdod, le Seigneur parla par la bouche d'Ésaïe: « Voilà trois ans, dit-il, que mon serviteur Ésaïe se promène sans vêtements ni chaussures. C'est un signe, un présage, qui concerne l'Égypte et l'Éthiopie.

Le roi d'Assyrie emmènera les Égyptiens prisonniers, il déportera les Éthiopiens, jeunes et vieux. Ils partiront alors sans vêtements ni chaussures, eux aussi. Le derrière nu, quelle honte pour les Égyptiens!

Quel découragement, quelle déception pour ceux qui espéraient quelque chose de l'Éthiopie, ou qui se vantaient de l'aide égyptienne! »

Ce jour-là, les populations de la côte où nous vivons s'exclameront: « Voilà ce qui advient de nos espérances! Nous comptions nous réfugier là-bas pour chercher secours et délivrance face au roi d'Assyrie… Où allons-nous maintenant trouver le salut? »
