Hymne d'Asaph. Pourquoi, ô Dieu, rejettes-tu toujours, ta colère fume-t-elle sur le troupeau dont tu es le pasteur?

Aie souvenir de ton peuple que tu acquis autrefois, réclamas comme ta tribu d'héritage, de la montagne de Sion, où tu fixas ta demeure!

Dirige tes pas vers des ruines déjà vieilles! L'ennemi dévaste tout dans le Sanctuaire.

Tes adversaires rugissent au sein de tes parvis: c'est leur culte qu'ils érigent en culte.

On dirait des hommes qui lèvent et font retomber les haches dans l'épaisseur d'un bois.

Et ils en brisent déjà les sculptures, sous les cognées et les marteaux à la fois.

Ils mettent en feu ton Sanctuaire; sacrilèges ils renversent la demeure de ton nom.

Ils disent en leur cœur: «Accablons-les tous ensemble!» Ils brûlent dans le pays tous les saints lieux d'assemblée.

Nous ne voyons plus notre culte, il n'y a plus de prophète, nous n'avons personne qui sache jusques à quand…!

Jusques à quand, ô Dieu, l'ennemi sera-t-il insultant? Toujours l'ennemi méprisera-t-il ton nom?

Pourquoi retires-tu ta main et ta droite? Tire-la de ton sein, et extermine!

Cependant Dieu est mon Roi dès les temps de jadis, opérant des délivrances dans le sein du pays.

Par ta puissance tu entr'ouvris la mer, tu brisas les têtes des dragons dans ses eaux.
14
Tu fracassas les têtes des Léviathans, et les livras en proie aux hôtes du désert.
15
Tu fis jaillir des sources et des torrents, tu desséchas des fleuves qui ne tarissent jamais.
16
A toi est le jour, et à toi la nuit; tu disposas les luminaires et le soleil.
17
Tu as placé toutes les bornes de la terre; l'été et l'hiver, c'est toi qui les as faits.

Souviens-t'en: l'ennemi outrage l'Éternel, et un peuple en délire insulte à ton nom.

Ne livre pas aux bêtes l'âme de ta tourterelle, et n'oublie pas pour toujours la vie de tes affligés!

Considère l'alliance! car les retraites du pays sont pleines de repaires de la violence.

Ne renvoie pas l'opprimé confus! Que l'affligé et le pauvre aient à louer ton nom!

Lève-toi, ô Dieu, défends ta cause! Pense aux outrages que te fait l'impie tous les jours!
23
N'oublie pas la clameur de tes ennemis, la rumeur de tes adversaires qui s'élève sans cesse.
