qu'à toi parvienne ma prière; prête l'oreille à ma supplication!

Car mon âme est rassasiée de malheur, et ma vie penche vers les Enfers.

Je suis assimilé à ceux qui descendent dans la fosse, je suis comme un homme sans force;

ma couche est entre les morts, je suis tel que les morts gisants dans le tombeau, auxquels tu ne penses plus, et qui ne sont plus à portée de ta main.

Tu m'as jeté dans une fosse profonde, dans des ténèbres, dans des abîmes.

Ton courroux pèse sur moi, et de tous tes flots tu m'as accablé. (Pause)

Tu as éloigné de moi ceux que je connais, tu m'as rendu pour eux un objet d'horreur; enveloppé, je ne trouve point d'issue.

Mes yeux fondent par l'effet du malheur; Éternel, je t'invoque chaque jour, et je tends mes mains vers toi.

Pour les morts feras-tu des miracles? Les ombres se lèveront-elles pour te louer? (Pause)

Dans le tombeau parle-t-on de ta grâce, et de ta fidélité, dans le séjour de la mort?

Dans les ténèbres tes miracles sont-ils remarqués, et ta justice, dans la région de l'oubli?

Je t'implore donc, Éternel, et dès le matin ma prière te prévient.

Éternel, pourquoi me rejettes-tu, et me caches-tu ta face?

Je suis malheureux et mourant dès ma jeunesse, je subis les terreurs et je suis éperdu.

Ton courroux m'assaille, tes frayeurs m'anéantissent,

m'enveloppent, comme des eaux, tout le jour, me cernent toutes à la fois.

Tu as éloigné de moi amis et compagnons, et ceux que je connais, me sont invisibles.
