Jag tänkte: Jag skall ta mig i akt och inte synda med min tunga, jag skall sätta lås för min mun, så länge gudlösa är inom hörhåll.

Så höll jag mig tyst och blev stum, jag teg, men till ingen nytta. Min plåga blev bitter,

hjärtat brände i mitt bröst, jag stönade, det brann som eld. Jag kunde inte tiga.

Herre, lär mig inse att jag skall dö och hur få mina tillmätta dagar är, inse att jag är förgänglig.

En handfull dagar är allt du ger mig, för dig är min livstid ett intet. Bara en vindfläkt är människan,

som en skuggbild vandrar hon kring. Bara en vindfläkt är skatterna hon hopar, hon vet inte vems de en gång skall bli.

Herre, vad har jag då att hoppas på? Mitt hopp står till dig.
9
Befria mig från alla mina synder, låt mig slippa bli smädad för dårskap.

Jag tiger och öppnar inte min mun — det är ju du som låtit detta ske.

Ta bort den plåga du lagt på mig! Jag förgås under slagen av din hand.

Du tuktar och straffar en man för hans synd, likt malen förtär du allt han har kärt. Bara en vindfläkt är människan.
13
Herre, hör min bön och lyssna till mitt rop, tig inte när jag gråter! Ty en tid är jag gäst hos dig, en främling som alla mina fäder.
14
Vänd bort din blick, så kan jag glädjas innan jag går bort och inte mer finns till.
