Auziți aceasta, toate popoarele; plecați urechea, toți locuitorii lumii,
2
mic și mare, bogat și nevoiaș împreună.
3
Gura mea va vorbi înțelepciune și cugetarea inimii mele va fi cu pricepere.
4
Îmi voi pleca urechea la pildă; îmi voi descoperi cu harfă știința mea adâncă.
5
Pentru ce să mă tem în zilele răului, când mă înconjoară nelegiuirea celor ce se țin de călcâiele mele?
6
Ei se încred în avuția lor și se fălesc cu mulțimea bogățiilor lor.
7
Niciunul nu poate răscumpăra pe fratele său, nici să dea lui Dumnezeu prețul răscumpărării lui
8
(căci răscumpărarea sufletului lor este scumpă și în veac nu se va face),
9
ca să trăiască în veac și să nu vadă putrezirea.
10
Căci va vedea că oamenii înțelepți mor; nebunul și prostul deopotrivă pier și lasă altora averea lor.
11
Gândul lor lăuntric este că vor sta în veac casele lor și locuințele lor din neam în neam: numesc cu numele lor pământurile lor.
12
Totuși omul în cinste nu rămâne: este asemenea dobitoacelor care pier.
13
Această cale a lor este nebunia lor: și cei ce vin după ei se desfată în spusele lor..
14
Sunt puși ca o turmă în Șeol: moartea îi va paște și cei drepți vor domni peste ei dimineața; și frumusețea lor o va mânca Șeolul, ca să nu mai aibă niciun locaș.
15
Dar Dumnezeu va răscumpăra sufletul meu din mâna Șeolului: căci mă va primi..
16
Nu te teme când se îmbogățește cineva, când se înmulțește slava casei lui.
17
Căci nu va lua nimic la moartea sa; slava lui nu se va pogorî după el.
18
Cu toate că și‐a binecuvântat sufletul în viața sa și oamenii te laudă când îți faci bine,
19
se va duce la neamul părinților săi; nu vor vedea lumina în veac.
20
Omul în cinste și fără pricepere este asemenea dobitoacelor care pier.
