Het woord dat de profeet Jeremia sprak tot Baruch, de zoon van Neria, toen Jeremia hem dicteerde wat hij in de boekrol moest opschrijven, in het vierde regeringsjaar van koning Jojakim van Juda:

"Dit zegt de Heer***, de God van Israël, over jou, Baruch:

Jij zegt: 'Wee mij, de Heer*** geeft mij leed op leed! Ik kan het niet meer verdragen, nooit heb ik rust!'

Zeg tegen Baruch: Dit zegt de Heer***: Zie, wat Ik had opgebouwd, breek Ik af; wat Ik had geplant, trek Ik uit, ja, dit hele land.
5
Zou jij voor jezelf dan grote dingen nastreven? Doe dat niet, want zie, Ik laat een groot onheil komen over alle mensen, zegt de Heer***, maar jouw leven zal Ik sparen, waar je ook gaat."
