In die jaar wat koning Sargon van Assirië die Filistynse stad Asdod beleër en oorwin het,

het die Here vir Jesaja seun van Amos gesê: “Trek al jou rouklere uit, ook jou sandale.” Jesaja het dit gedoen en kaal en sonder skoene rondgeloop.

Toe het die Here gesê: “My dienaar Jesaja het die laaste drie jaar kaal en sonder skoene rondgeloop. Dit is ’n teken, ’n simbool van die verskriklike moeilikheid wat Ek oor Egipte en Etiopië gaan bring.

Want die koning van Assirië sal die mense van Egipte en Etiopië as gevangenes wegneem. “Hy sal hulle kaal en sonder skoene laat loop, die jonges en die oues. Hulle sal kaal wees, tot Egipte se skande.

Almal wat hulle vertroue op Etiopië gestel het en oor Egipte grootgepraat het, sal bang word en ook skaam kry.

Hulle sal sê: ‘Kyk wat het gebeur met dié op wie ons gehoop het en na wie ons gevlug het om ons van die koning van Assirië te red! Hoe sal ons ooit kan ontsnap?’”
