HERRE, refs meg ikkje i din vreide, straff meg ikkje i din harme!

For dine piler har råka meg, di hand kviler tungt på meg.

I kroppen er ingenting uskadd, for du er harm, ikkje eit bein er heilt, for eg har synda.

Skulda veks meg over hovudet lik ei bør som er altfor tung.

Eg har sår som luktar og renn av verk på grunn av min dårskap.

Eg er kroket og nedbøygd, eg går og sørgjer dagen lang.

Hoftene brenn av smerte, ingenting er friskt i mitt kjøt.

Eg er kraftlaus og knust; eg skrik ut mitt hjartes klage.

Herre, du kjenner min lengsel, mitt sukk er ikkje løynt for deg.

Hjartet hamrar, krafta sviktar, sjølv lyset i auga har forlate meg.

Vener og dei som står meg nær, held seg borte frå mi plage, mine næraste held seg langt unna.

Dei som står meg etter livet, set snarer for meg. Dei som vil meg vondt, talar om å skada meg, dei grundar dagen lang på svik.

Men eg er lik ein døv, eg høyrer ikkje, eg er lik ein mållaus som ikkje opnar munnen.

Eg er lik ein mann som ikkje høyrer og ikkje har svar i sin munn.

Men det er deg, HERRE, eg ventar på. Du vil svara meg, Herre, min Gud.

Eg sa: Lat dei ikkje gleda seg over meg og ikkje briska seg når foten min er ustø.

For eg held på å falla, mi smerte står alltid for meg.

Ja, eg vedkjenner mi skuld og sørgjer over mi synd.

Men fiendane lever og er sterke, dei som hatar meg utan grunn, er mange.

Dei som løner godt med vondt, står meg imot fordi eg jagar etter det gode.

HERRE, forlat meg ikkje! Min Gud, ver ikkje langt borte frå meg!
