Poema. De Asaf*. Ó Deus, porque nos rejeitas para sempre? Porque se inflama a tua ira contra o rebanho do qual és pastor?

Lembra-te do teu povo, que adquiriste noutros tempos, como tribo que te pertence e resgataste do monte Sião, onde tens a tua morada.

Dirige os teus passos para estas ruínas sem fim; o inimigo tudo destruiu no santuário!

Os teus adversários rugiram no lugar das tuas assembleias, hastearam nelas, como troféus, as suas bandeiras.

Pareciam lenhadores a brandir o machado numa floresta espessa.
6
Destruíram os seus madeiramentos a golpes de malhos e martelos.
7
Deitaram fogo ao teu santuário, profanaram e arrasaram a morada do teu nome.
8
Disseram no seu coração: «Destruamos tudo!»; e incendiaram neste país todos os lugares de culto.
9
Já não vemos os nossos sinais, já não existem mais profetas, e ninguém sabe até quando isto durará!

Até quando, ó Deus, irá ultrajar-nos o opressor? Até quando irá o inimigo desprezar o teu nome?

Porque retiras a tua mão e escondes a tua direita?

Pois Tu, ó Deus, desde sempre foste o meu rei, aquele que realiza libertações pela terra.

Dividiste o mar com o teu poder, esmagaste as cabeças aos monstros marinhos.
14
Quebraste as cabeças do Leviatan e deste-o a comer aos monstros do mar.
15
Fizeste brotar fontes e torrentes e secaste rios caudalosos.
16
Teu é o dia, tua é a noite; Tu criaste a Lua e o Sol.
17
Fixaste os limites à terra inteira, fizeste o Verão e o Inverno.
18
Lembra-te, Senhor, de que o inimigo te insultou e um povo insensato desprezou o teu nome.
19
Não entregues às feras a vida dos teus fiéis; não esqueças para sempre a vida dos teus pobres.
20
Olha para a tua aliança, pois os recantos do país estão cheios de violência.
21
Que os humildes não voltem confundidos; que o pobre e o indigente possam louvar o teu nome.
22
Ergue-te, ó Deus, defende a tua causa; lembra-te das ofensas contínuas dos insensatos.
23
Não te esqueças dos gritos dos teus inimigos, da vozearia sempre crescente dos teus adversários.
