Au maître chantre. Psaume de David. Eternel, tu m'as sondé et tu m'as connu.

Que je sois assis ou debout, tu en as connaissance; Tu découvres de loin ma pensée,

Tu me vois marcher et me reposer Et tu as une parfaite connaissance de toutes mes voies.
4
Car la parole n'est pas sur ma langue, Que voici, Eternel, tu connais déjà tout.

Devant, derrière, tu m'enserres, Et tu mets ta main sur moi...

Science trop merveilleuse pour moi ! Et si élevée que je ne puis y atteindre.
7
Où irais-je loin de ton Esprit Et où fuirais-je loin de ta face?
8
Si je monte aux cieux, tu y es; Si je me couche au sépulcre, t'y voilà.
9
Si je prends les ailes de l'aube du jour Et que j'aille habiter à l'extrémité de la mer,
10
Là même ta main me conduira Et ta droite me saisira.
11
Si je dis: Qu'il n'y ait que ténèbres autour de moi, Et que la clarté qui m'entoure se change en nuit,
12
Les ténèbres mêmes ne sont plus ténèbres devant toi, Et la nuit resplendit comme le jour; Ténèbres ou lumière, c'est tout un.
13
Car c'est toi qui as formé mes reins, Qui m'as tissé dans le sein de ma mère.
14
Je te loue de ce que j'ai été fait D'une manière étonnante et merveilleuse;
15
Merveilleuses sont tes œuvres ! Mon âme ne se lasse pas de le reconnaître.
16
Quand j'étais là en germe, tes yeux me voyaient, Et sur ton livre ils étaient tous inscrits, Les jours qui m'étaient destinés, Avant qu'aucun d'eux existât.
17
Que tes pensées, ô Dieu, me sont précieuses, Que le nombre en est grand !
18
Veux-je les compter? Elles sont plus nombreuses que le sable. Quand je m'éveille, je suis encore avec toi !
19
O Dieu ! si tu faisais mourir le méchant ! Hommes de sang, éloignez-vous de moi !
20
Ils se servent de ton nom pour commettre le crime, Ils l'invoquent pour mentir, eux, tes ennemis.
21
Ne haïrais-je pas, Eternel, ceux qui te haïssent? Et n'aurais-je pas horreur de ceux qui s'élèvent contre toi?
22
Je les hais d'une parfaite haine, Je les tiens pour mes ennemis !
23
Sonde-moi, ô Dieu, et connais mon cœur; Eprouve-moi, et connais mes pensées !
24
Et vois si je suis une voie de perdition, Et conduis-moi sur la voie de l'éternité !
