Au jour de ma détresse, je cherche le Seigneur, Ma main est étendue pendant la nuit, sans se lasser; Mon âme refuse d'être consolée.

Quand je cherche à me souvenir de Dieu, je soupire; Quand je m'efforce de méditer, mon esprit est tout abattu ! (Jeu d'instruments.)

Tu tiens mes paupières [en éveil]; Je suis tout troublé, et je ne puis parler.

Je pense aux jours anciens, Aux années d'autrefois.

Je cherche à me rappeler mon cantique dans la nuit, Je fais des réflexions au-dedans de mon cœur, Et mon esprit médite:

Est-ce donc pour toujours que le Seigneur rejettera? A-t-il renoncé à faire grâce?

Sa bonté est-elle à jamais épuisée? Sa parole a-t-elle cessé pour toutes les générations?

Dieu a-t-il oublié d'avoir pitié? Ou bien, dans sa colère, a-t-il fermé la source de ses compassions? (Jeu d'instruments.)

Puis j'ai dit: Ce qui fait ma souffrance, C'est que la droite du Très-Haut n'est plus la même...

Je rappellerai les œuvres de l'Eternel, Oui, je veux me souvenir de tes merveilles d'autrefois

Et je veux réfléchir à toute ton œuvre Et méditer tes hauts faits.

O Dieu ! ta voie est sainte ! Quel Dieu est grand comme Dieu?

C'est toi qui es Dieu; tu fais des prodiges; Tu as manifesté parmi les peuples ta puissance.

Par ton bras, tu as racheté ton peuple, Les fils de Jacob et de Joseph. (Jeu d'instruments.)

Les eaux t'ont vu, ô Dieu ! Les eaux t'ont vu, elles ont tremblé, Et les abîmes ont frémi.

Les nuages précipitèrent des torrents d'eau, Les nues firent entendre leur voix, Et tes flèches volèrent de toutes parts.

Ton tonnerre éclata dans le tourbillon, Les éclairs illuminèrent le monde; La terre frémit et trembla.

A travers la mer passa ton chemin, Et tes sentiers à travers les grandes eaux; Et tes traces ne furent point reconnues.

Tu as conduit ton peuple comme un troupeau Par la main de Moïse et d'Aaron.
