Poème d'Asaph. Pourquoi, Dieu! rejettes-tu sans cesse? Pourquoi ta colère s'enflamme-t-elle Contre le troupeau de ton pâturage?

Souviens-toi de ton peuple, Tu l'as acquis jadis, tu l'as racheté, Il est la tribu de ton héritage! (Souviens-toi) de la montagne de Sion, où tu faisais ta demeure;

Porte tes pas vers ces endroits constamment dévastés! L'ennemi a tout mis à mal dans le saint lieu.

Tes adversaires ont rugi à l'intérieur de ton lieu sacré; Ils y ont placé pour enseignes leurs enseignes.

On les a reconnus, pareils à celui qui lève La cognée sur des arbres touffus;

Pourquoi retires-tu ta main, ta droite? Sors-la de ton sein! Extermine!

Dieu est mon roi dès les temps anciens, Lui qui opère des délivrances au milieu de la terre.

C'est toi qui as fendu la mer par ta puissance, Tu as brisé les têtes des monstres sur les eaux;

C'est toi qui as écrasé les têtes du Léviathan. Tu l'as donné pour nourriture À (tout) un peuple, aux habitants du désert.

C'est toi qui as fait jaillir source et torrent. C'est toi qui as mis à sec des fleuves intarissables.

À toi le jour, à toi aussi la nuit; C'est toi qui as disposé l'astre (nocturne ) et le soleil.

C'est toi qui as fixé toutes les limites de la terre. L'été et l'hiver, c'est toi qui les a formés.

Souviens-toi de ceci: l'ennemi déshonore l'Éternel, Un peuple insensé outrage ton nom!

Ne livre pas l'âme de ta tourterelle aux animaux, N'oublie pas sans cesse la vie de tes malheureux!

Sois attentif à l'alliance! Car les lieux sombres du pays Sont pleins de repaires de violence.

Que l'opprimé ne retourne pas confus! Que le malheureux et le pauvre louent ton nom!

Lève-toi, Dieu! Défends ta cause! Souviens-toi du déshonneur Que te fait subir l'insensé tout le jour!

N'oublie pas la voix de tes adversaires, Le tumulte sans cesse croissant de ceux qui se dressent contre toi!
