Éternel, Dieu de mon salut! Je crie le jour et pendant la nuit devant toi.

Que ma prière parvienne en ta présence! Tends l'oreille à mon cri!

Car mon âme est rassasiée de maux, Et ma vie touche au séjour des morts.

Je suis compté parmi ceux qui descendent dans la fosse, Je suis comme un homme qui n'a plus de force.

Je suis étendu parmi les morts, Semblable à ceux qui sont transpercés Et couchés dans un tombeau, À ceux dont tu n'as plus le souvenir Et qui sont séparés de ta main.

Tu m'as jeté dans une fosse profonde, Dans les ténèbres, dans les bas-fonds.

Ta fureur s'appesantit sur moi, Et tu m'accables de tous tes flots.

Tu as éloigné de moi ceux que je connais, Tu m'as rendu pour eux un objet d'horreur; (Je suis) enfermé et je ne puis sortir.

Mon œil s'éteint de souffrances; Je t'invoque tous les jours, ô Éternel! J'étends vers toi les mains.

Est-ce pour les morts que tu feras un miracle? Les défunts se lèveront-ils pour te célébrer?

Redira-t-on ta bienveillance dans le tombeau, Ta fidélité dans l'abîme de perdition?

Tes miracles sont-ils connus dans les ténèbres, Et ta justice dans la terre de l'oubli?

Et moi, c'est toi, Éternel, que j'ai appelé au secours; Au matin ma prière va au-devant de toi.

Pourquoi, Éternel, repousses-tu mon âme, Me caches-tu ta face?

Je suis malheureux et moribond dès ma jeunesse, Je suis chargé de tes terreurs, je suis troublé.

Les ardeurs de ta (colère) passent sur moi, Tes épouvantes me réduisent au silence.

Elles m'environnent tout le jour comme des eaux, Elles m'enveloppent toutes à la fois.

Tu as éloigné de moi amis et compagnons; Ceux que je connais, (ne sont que) ténèbres.
