Jeg tenkte: «Jeg vil ta meg i vare så jeg ikke synder med tungen; jeg vil holde min munn i tømme så lenge de gudløse ser meg.»

Så ble jeg målløs og stille, jeg var taus og hadde det ikke godt. Min smerte var så bitter,

jeg ble het om hjertet; jeg stønnet, og det brant som ild. Da tok jeg til orde og sa:

«Lær meg, Herre, å kjenne min utgang, mine tilmålte dager, hvor få de er, så jeg kan skjønne hvor forgjengelig jeg er.»

Se, dagene du har gitt meg, er få, min levetid er ingenting i dine øyne. Ja, alle mennesker er som et pust,
7
som en skygge går de sin vei. De strever og stønner til ingen nytte, de samler, men vet ikke hvem som får det.
8
Og nå, hva skal jeg vente på, Herre? Mitt håp står bare til deg.
9
Så fri meg fra alle mine synder! Gjør meg ikke til spott for dårer!

Jeg tier og åpner ikke min munn, for det er du som har laget det slik.

Ta bort den plagen du la på meg! Jeg går til grunne når du slår med din hånd.

Når du refser og tukter en mann for hans synd, da ødelegger du hans stas, som når møllen eter opp tøy. Ja, alle mennesker er som et pust.
13
Hør min bønn, Herre, lytt til mitt rop, og vær ikke taus når jeg gråter! For jeg er en gjest hos deg, en fremmed som alle mine fedre.
14
Ta ditt blikk fra meg, så lyser jeg opp, før jeg går bort og ikke er mer.
