Denne salmen er en læresalme av David. Salige er de som har fått tilgivelse for sine lovbrudd, og fått sine synder skjult for Guds øyne. Salig er det mennesket som Herren ikke lenger fører regnskap for synd, og som av hele sitt hjerte har et ønske om å leve rett.

Så lenge jeg tidde om min synd, tærte det på kropp og sjel. Jeg stønnet. Dag og natt kjente jeg at Du ville ha et oppgjør med meg. Så lenge jeg sto imot Deg, rant kreftene ut av meg.

Men så åpnet jeg meg for Deg og innrømmet mine synder. Jeg ville ikke lenger prøve å skjule dem. Da tilga Du meg både min synd og alt jeg hadde gjort meg skyldig i. Derfor skal alle som tror på Deg, be til Deg og nå fram til Deg. Selv mot store prøvelser vil Du beskytte dem. Jeg kan få skjule meg hos Deg, for Du beskytter meg mot vanskeligheter. Mitt hjerte flyter over av glede og jubel.

Herren sier: «Jeg vil lede deg på rett vei og vise deg hvor du skal gå. Jeg vil følge deg med Mine øyne og gi deg gode råd.»

Ikke vær som en hest eller et muldyr uten forstand, som må tvinges med bissel og tømmer for å styres. Den som lever uten Gud, får mange lidelser. Men den som stoler på Herren, vil møte Guds nåde og trofasthet over alt. Derfor skal dere som vil leve for Gud, fylles av jubel. Gled dere!
