Prière d'un malheureux à bout de force, qui expose sa plainte au Seigneur.

Seigneur, écoute ma prière, que mon appel parvienne jusqu'à toi!

Ne te détourne pas de moi le jour où je suis dans la détresse. Tends vers moi une oreille attentive; le jour où je t'appelle au secours, réponds-moi sans tarder!
4
Car ma vie s'évanouit comme une fumée, mes os sont en feu comme un brasier.
5
Comme l'herbe coupée, mon cœur se dessèche; j'en oublie de manger.
6
On n'entend que mes gémissements, je n'ai plus que la peau sur les os.
7
Je ressemble au hibou du désert, je suis comme la chouette des ruines.
8
Je reste éveillé et je suis comme un oiseau solitaire sur le toit.
9
Tous les jours, mes ennemis me provoquent; ils me raillent, ils me nomment dans leurs malédictions.
10
Pour me nourrir, je mange de la cendre, ce que je bois est mêlé de mes larmes.
11
Ainsi, dans ta fureur et ton indignation, tu m'as soulevé et jeté au loin.
12
Ma vie s'étire, comme l'ombre du soir, je suis comme l'herbe qui se dessèche.
13
Mais toi, Seigneur, tu demeures pour toujours, et ton souvenir reste de génération en génération.
14
Tu vas intervenir, par amour pour Sion. Il est temps que tu lui accordes ta grâce, oui, il en est grand temps.
15
Nous tes serviteurs, nous aimons ses pierres, nous sommes attachés même à ses décombres.
16
Que les populations étrangères reconnaissent l'autorité du Seigneur, et tous les rois de la terre sa gloire!
17
Quand le Seigneur rebâtira Sion, quand il apparaîtra dans sa gloire,
18
il se tournera vers la prière de ceux qu'on a dépouillés, il ne méprisera pas leur prière.
19
Notez cela par écrit pour les générations à venir, et le peuple qui sera créé acclamera le Seigneur!

Du haut de son sanctuaire, le Seigneur se penche pour regarder. Depuis les cieux, il tourne son regard vers la terre
21
pour écouter la plainte du prisonnier et détacher les liens des personnes qui sont condamnées à mort.
22
Alors on proclamera dans Sion le nom du Seigneur; on chantera ses louanges à Jérusalem,
23
quand les peuples et les royaumes s'y rassembleront pour servir le Seigneur.
24
Il a épuisé mes forces en pleine course, il a abrégé ma vie.
25
C'est pourquoi je m'écrie: « Mon Dieu, toi qui subsistes de génération en génération, ne me fais pas mourir si tôt! »

Il y a longtemps, tu as fondé la terre, les cieux sont ton ouvrage.
27
Tout cela disparaîtra, mais toi, tu demeureras. La terre et les cieux tomberont en lambeaux comme de vieux habits, et tu les remplaceras comme un vêtement. Ils céderont la place,
28
mais toi, tu restes le même, ta vie n'a pas de fin.
29
Les enfants de ceux qui te servent s'établiront et leurs descendants resteront sous ton regard.
