Prière de Moïse, l'homme proche de Dieu. Seigneur, de génération en génération, c'est toi qui as été notre refuge.

Avant que les montagnes naissent, avant même que tu enfantes la terre et le monde, depuis toujours et pour toujours, tu es Dieu.

Tu fais retourner les humains à la poussière, tu leur dis: « Retournez d'où vous êtes venus. »

Pour toi, mille ans sont aussi brefs que la journée d'hier, déjà passée, ou quelques heures de la nuit.

Tu mets fin à la vie humaine; elle passe comme un court sommeil. elle est comme l'herbe qui pousse:

le matin, elle fleurit et grandit; le soir, elle se fane, elle est sèche.

Oui, ta colère nous balaie, ta fureur nous terrifie.

Tu mets nos fautes devant toi, nos secrets à la lumière de ta face.

Sous l'effet de ta colère, notre vie décline; le temps d'un soupir, elle arrive à sa fin.

Notre vie? Elle dure soixante-dix ans, quatre-vingts ans pour les plus vigoureux, mais nous n'en retirons que peine et malheur. La vie passe vite et nous nous envolons.

Qui connaît la force de ta colère, et ta fureur qui pousse à reconnaître ton autorité?

Fais-nous comprendre que nos jours sont comptés, et nous aurons un cœur sage.

Reviens, Seigneur, n'attends plus, accorde ta grâce à ceux qui te servent.

Dès le matin, comble-nous de ton amour; nous crierons de joie, nous nous réjouirons toute notre vie.

Longtemps tu nous as accablés. Donne-nous maintenant autant d'années de joie que nous en avons eu de malheur.

Que nous puissions te voir agir, et que nos descendants découvrent ta grandeur!

Seigneur notre Dieu, accorde-nous ta douceur, affermis pour nous l'ouvrage de nos mains, oui, affermis l'ouvrage de nos mains!
